Newspaper offers eco-friendly stories
A Golden Bay writer has just launched a free monthly newspaper featuring eco-friendly and low-carbon projects from around the region.
The very first issue of Climate Love, is author and reporter, Charlotte Squire’s brand-new brainchild.
Free issues are now available from cafes and shops around Nelson Tasman.
Squire said the newspaper was designed to offer short articles for people to read, perhaps while they’re waiting for their coffee, or over a cup of tea.
‘‘I see so many interesting positive projects going on that I discover through my work as a journalist, but also because I look for them,’’ she said.
‘‘I also see a lot of fear about climate change, and I guess I just want to share that news with people – that there are people making a difference.’’
Climate change is one of the ‘‘big issues’’ of our lifetime, and telling the inspiring stories of everyday people who are busy taking it on was her contribution, she said.
A few stories in the first issue feature up-cycled yurt canvas, an old railway line that’s now used for cycling and walking, November gardening tips, and vegetable anatomy art.
‘‘I want it to cover all parts of our community – the arts, business, sport, food, health – because there’s good stuff happening everywhere for the planet these days.’’
Squire said she was inspired by the city of Sydney, who had poured millions into creating a low carbon city.
‘‘We’re different here in Tasman, in that much of this district is rural, but I know a few farmers who are passionate about sustainability and are walking their talk.’’
Squire is the author of the novella, The Springs, and founder of the solutions-focused website, Happyzine.
She has also worked as a reporter for the Nelson Mail and GB Weekly.
‘‘I was inspired by Marg Braggins, who with Neil Wilson, has just sold the GB Weekly, to give a print newspaper a go ... believe it or not, some print newspapers are going strong.’’
Climate Love is available in shops throughout the Nelson and Tasman regions.
