Nelson’s friendly people take home top city title

- SARA MEIJ

For Brook resident Andrea Warn, Nelson is the best place in New Zealand to raise children and live a full life.

‘‘We have a close-knit, caring community and a strong sense of community that we build on.’’

Warn said the online community platform Neighbourly had brought the Brook community closer together.

‘‘If anyone needs anything they can just put a call out for help on Neighbourly.’’

Warn is far from the only Nelsonian who feels this way, as Nelson was recently named New Zealand’s most neighbourly city.

The city is taking home the first ever Neighbours Day Aotea- roa City of the Year title.

The win comes after more than 65 streets in Nelson organised events, such as street BBQs, during the Neighbours Day Aotearoa 2016 campaign earlier this year.

Tahunanui Community Centre’s Katie Hughes said she was proud to be part of ‘‘such an awesome community’’.

Nelson had the highest per capita participation of any city in the country.

Neighbourly co-founder Casey Eden said he thought it was exciting to hear his hometown had been named the most neighbourly city in New Zealand.

‘‘We work alongside the Neighbours Day Aotearoa team to help inspire Neighbourly members to participate in the campaign country.

‘‘I had a great childhood growing up in Nelson and my family had many ‘neighbourly’ relationships with those living nearby.’’

To celebrate the title, everyone in Nelson is invited to ‘‘Spring Fest’’ at Burrell Park Community Gardens on Sunday, September 25 from 12pm to 3pm. throughout the
