Food event raises $14k for breast cancer

- SAMANTHA GEE

A generous donation as a result of the ‘‘Eat Nuture Love’’ event will allow women with breast cancer to continue being supported throughout the region.

Local chefs collaborated for a tapas-style degustation which raised $14,000 for the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust.

The women behind the event, Hannah Straker and Annie Leather had known each other for a number of years but recently became closer after both experiencing breast cancer.

They were both grateful for the support they received from the local Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust.

Leather said the trust not only provided invaluable support during treatment, but also while adjusting to the ‘‘new normal’’ after cancer.

The trust offered exercise classes and restorative yoga courses which both women found very beneficial.

Six local chefs rose to the challenge of ‘‘Eat Nurture Love’’ and provided a dish and a dessert nibble each for 100 people.

Straker’s mother Fay Maschler, the long serving restaurant critic for The London also spoke at Evening Standard the event.

Local businesses Talley’s, Bidvest, Benge and Co, Achilles Trust and Bin Inn and Aronui Wines supported the event with help from chefs Dan Monopoli, Sherilyn Maxwell, Sue McNulty, Yuki Takeoda, Jill Stevenson, and Steve Cone.

Leather and Straker said they were grateful to all those who were involved, particularly to the chefs that donated their time to the cause.
