Little house for big cause

- SARA MEIJ

An innovative Christmas prize will help a Nelson charity continue to deliver food to needy families.

Placemakers Tasman Frame and Truss is raffling off a $2000 custom-built Wendy house for Christmas to support Food for Families.

The firm’s site manager Kye Fothergill said they had already sold quite a few tickets.

Food for Families supplies nutritious school lunches to Victory, Stoke, Tahunanui and Auckland Point Primary Schools for a gold coin twice a week.

Food for Families coordinator Martin Reading said it was encouraging that Placemakers came up with the idea for a fundraiser.

‘‘[It’s] fantastic, we get help here and there but a lot of the time we just go through the motions ourselves, raising our own funds and keeping it all going.’’

Reading started the charity Food For Families in 2013, providing free hot meals in Victory Square. Since then it has grown to feed people in Stoke and Tahunanui and last year, it began a lunchbox scheme for primary schools pupils.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at Ecomoon on Gloucester Street in Nelson or by phoning Kye on 027 7064275.
