Finding the positive in parenting

- BRENDA HOLDAWAY Brenda Holdaway is the Whanau Facilitator with Nelson Tasman Kindergartens.

As a parent it is often really hard to find good things that our children are doing as the negative or inappropriate things always seem to take more energy.

We can spend more time telling our children off or correcting the things that they have done, and they seem to dominate our thoughts of the day. It would be good to turn it around so that we focus more on the positive things that happen than the negative.

A good way to remind yourselves to do this and to get started is each night, when you are having your family meal together, ask everyone in the family to say one thing that they noticed when someone was doing something good that day.

You may need to start and say something positive about each child so you are modelling what you expect them to do. After doing it daily for a few weeks, their understanding will develop and it will become easier to find things to say. Finding positive things to comment on during this time will support you to find more positive things to comment on during the day.
