Looking after yourself key to parenting

- BRENDA HOLDAWAY

Being a parent is very time consuming and we often never find the time to look after ourselves, yet taking care of ourselves is one of the key things we need to do to be a good parent.

Think of the things that you like to do to make you happy and make sure that you schedule in time at least each fortnight to do them.

It may be that you need to get out for exercise, or sit quietly to read; whatever it is that makes you happy, schedule it into your weekly plan.

It’s also important to ensure that you look after your relationship, as often we are so busy making sure that our children are happy that we forget about our partner.

Think of things that you can do to nurture your relationship; such as going out together, having a nice meal together at home once the children are in bed, or going for a bike ride together.

Find ways to make them happen, as it is just as important to nurture your relationship as it is to look after your own needs.
