Nayland runner ends season on high
Nayland College student Kalani Sheridan recently won a bronze medal in the M18 3000m at the New Zealand track and field championships. He spoke with reporter after finishing his season on a high.
If you’re going into a race it’s always to get a medal. No one goes in wanting to get fourth or fifth, it’s always to go as high as possible. I was leading in the first couple of laps but I dropped behind in the second half of the race but I was able to take it back on the last lap and I overtook two people from quite a way back to get the medal. I couldn’t have run faster so I’m happy with that race. I actually like hanging back until the end. I just happened to be
It’s pretty up there. I had a silver medal in cross country two years ago and I had a bronze in the 3km last year as well.
I don’t have a preference yet but I do better in cross country and that’s a longer race so I think I might be going to 5km. But I do like 1500m races as well. I won’t know until later next season.
I usually just relax. Sometimes I’m too nervous to eat breakfast depending on how early it is. For that race seeing it was at 9.30am it was pretty much just getting up out of bed, getting changed and leaving for the track. I don’t really have a routine.
Most of the time it’s just focus- ing on my breathing and relaxing and just focusing on the race. I don’t think about too much else.
[They’re] the first records I’ve ever broken before so it’s pretty cool to know that my name is on there.
I’d love to get to that level, it’d be really cool, especially since Julian did and he was with Greg. Julian actually came down to watch the meet in Hamilton. I’ve started doing SAT tests and need to start talking to people. It’ll be a lot of working in with Greg, talking to universities and coaches about what you want and what they want.
