Residents get to Seymour history

Seymour Avenue residents in the Brook can finally celebrate being an official heritage precinct.

A heritage board was unveiled on Saturday, explaining the different kinds of architecture as well as providing information on the area was before there were houses.

One of the street’s residents, Andrea Warn, said the ceremony and subsequent street party had a ‘‘very good turnout’’.

‘‘Two local iwi representatives did a blessing and spoke a bit about the six tribes in the region.

‘‘A Nelson flag was draped over the heritage sign and they asked the children to take the flag off and unveil the board.’’

Warn said the outcome of the project was ‘‘brilliant’’ and she was really happy with the installation of the board.

She said she hoped it would create a sense of community and pride in the area.

Warn said the street was the ‘‘best example of Nelson’s 50 years of architecture’’.

One side of the board explained some of the area’s history and the other side had photos of the different styles of houses in the street.

‘‘As you travel down the street you can see the different heritage over 45 years of architecture.

‘‘It goes from villas from the 1900s to transitional villas of the late 1900s to early 2000s and there’s not many examples of those in Nelson.’’
