Miro showered with attention at finale
Young Miro Romanowski’s new shower room was officially handed over to the family at a weekend barbecue celebration.
However, the five-year-old, who has cerebral palsy and ataxia, is still getting used to his new shower routine.
About 50 supporters and sponsors gathered at the family’s Teal Valley home, near Nelson, to mark the end of the three-month project.
The project was organised by Nelson man Murray Leaning and supported by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology as well as local construction firms, tradies and businesses.
The Mitre 10 Mega Helping Hands team also chipped in to spruce up the gardens.
Miro’s mum Eva Romanowski said the family has been using the new shower for about three weeks.
‘‘It’s amazing. It’s all there, it’s all working.’’
And while Miro loved the shower, he wasn’t too keen on his new shower chair.
‘‘He’s still young and needs to overcome a few of his hurdles, but once he’s there he’s actually got a bathroom he can use.’’
The family’s previous shower was located about 10 metres from the house up six steep steps.
It was becoming unsafe for Miro who has muscles spasms.
The family also wanted him to have independence as he got older.
The new shower room was big enough for Miro to wheel himself in.
It has a non-slip floor and the sink and light switches were at a height he can reach.
Eva said the volunteers and supporters of the project have been incredible.
‘‘I’m completely stunned and it’s fantastic to think that there are so many people out there willing to lend a hand when it’s tough for some people sometimes.
‘‘I’d like to see myself in their shoes on day and maybe chip in with the next project.
‘‘I wish I could just pay it forward one day. I think that’s what the whole thing is really about.’’
The shower project came after Leaning organised the revamp the Perrone family’s home and bathroom last year.
