Plenty for sail at Mapua fundraiser

The Leader (Nelson) - - YOUR HEALTH - TIM O'CONNELL

The auction of a donated Topper yacht is one item guaranteed to float someone’s boat at this weekend’s buy sell swap meet at Mapua Boat Club.

A gold-mine for those seeking any marine, boating and fishing gear, the event will take place this Saturday at the MBC clubrooms from 9am until 12pm.

The yacht is a great one-person learn to sail unit, made from plastic, easily rigged and easily maintained and it’s light enough for one person to easily carry.

It will be auctioned at 11am on the wharf in front of the Mapua Boat Club rooms.

All proceeds from the auctioned yacht will go to the local Tamaha Sea Scout group.

Mapua Boat Club committee member Wayne Daniel said the club sought to help the local sea scouts where possible.

However, with recent work and development occurring around the wharf, it had become ‘‘a little bit impractical’’ for the scouts to operate from their current site alongside the boat club.

‘‘We are part of the greater community efforts to foster a future for the sea scouts in Mapua,’’ he said.

Several commercial marine companies have also pledged the sale of their unwanted stock, while anyone with gear to sell is welcome to attend.

There is a cost of $10 to book a table space or $5 for club members.

If you have anything to donate, need a hand getting gear to the event or wish to book a space, please contact Wayne on 021 606614.
