Football awards dished out
Marlborough Mariners defender Aaron Hayes was named player of the year at Marlborough Football’s awards evening on Saturday.
The vastly-experienced Hayes, who has been an outstanding performer on the Marlborough football scene for many seasons, found a home in the centre of the Mariners’ defensive line this season and made it his own.
‘‘I thought the coaches had lost their marbles when they told me they wanted me to play sweeper. It took a few weeks to get the hang of the position but I have enjoyed the challenge. It’s been one of my most enjoyable seasons,’’ said Hayes.
Coach Dave Turner was full of praise for the uncompromising player.
‘‘He is the one ingredient that has given Mariners an extra place in the ladder this year,’’ said Turner. ‘‘He’s a pleasure to have in the team and a fantastic role model for many players.’’
Hayes was also named the team’s player of the year by his team members, while midfielder Bjorn Waechter was voted player of the year by the coaches.
Division one player of the year was striker Alex Connor-McClean, who claimed the golden boot with 14 goals.
Division two player of the year was Troy Wilson while Matt Weaver, with 18 goals, picked up the golden boot in that grace.
Holly Spence was voted the women’s player of the year, while Liam Sluiter was named the colt of the year.
Blenheim Valley United were honoured with the team of the year award by the referees.
The Cheryl Thompson Memorial Trophy, awarded for provid- ing inspiration to others went to Paul McClean from the Blenheim Valley club. MF general manager Andrea Smith-Scott said, ‘‘It is [Paul’s] cool, calm and collected personality that makes him a pleasure to have in the football community. He is an inspiration to others for his commitment and passion to playing the game, coaching players, running his club and as a valued member of the district executive of Marlborough Football.’’
