New St John opshop in town

- SAMANTHA GEE

Nelsonians will soon be able to donate and buy quality secondhand items at a new St John opportunity shop.

The premises on Rutherford St, next to coffee shop Zumo, is set to become a St John Community Shop due to open in September.

St John Nelson area chairman Keith Adams said the shop was essential to help to fund St John services.

‘‘The shop is based on a very successful model which has operated in other North and South Island locations for many years,’’ Adams said.

‘‘St John community shops are another way for local people to support St John and for our organisation to continue our work in local communities’’.

The ‘‘one stop St John shop’’ also meant people could also make volunteer enquiries, buy first aid kits and mobility aids and get information about St John and pay accounts.

Money raised from items sold would be used locally to support St John ambulance services and programmes such as the Health Shuttle, Friends of the Emergency Department, Caring Caller and St John Youth.

‘‘In the Nelson area we need to raise $1000 every day so we can maintain the services we provide in our community,’’ Adams said.

St John are looking for volunteers and items in good condition, those interested can contact Sarah McCabe on (03) 546 9445.
