Nelson Mail

Dream and reality

-

On July 15, the Nelson Mail published a letter by Anton Hyman and a reply from Nick Smith. This appears to me to be a classic example of two people talking past one another with no understanding.

Unless I ammistaken, the visions they apply to the words ‘‘Southern Link’’ are quite different. Anton’s ‘‘Southern Link’’ is a two lane connection from Beatson Rd to St Vincent St, which will create a barrier of traffic between the people living on the hillsides and their work, and their children’s schools.

Nick’s ‘‘Southern Link’’ on the other hand is an extension of Wakatu Drive going to the port, complete with over and underpasses for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists so there is no interaction between Southern Link traffic and intersections between Toi Toi and St Vincent Sts, Washington Rd and Gloucester St, or Halifax St and Haven Rd. With such a difference in vision, there is no wonder that they have such large differences in their opinions. The real question is which vision is a dream, and which is the real proposal?
