I wonder if Cynthia McConville and others who champion the Southern Link have read the publicatio­n ‘‘Connecting the Top of the South’’ published in 2014 by the three top of the south councils.

On page 26 it states: ‘‘The Arterial Traffic Study.....found that there is not a significan­t congestion problem in Nelson, nor is one forecast to develop over the modelled time period of the study, the next 25 years.’’

In any case, it is obvious that the congestion, such as it is, only happens during the morning and afternoon commuter rush hour and especially during term time. So, what is proposed? A new road costing millions, loss of the green and wonderful Railway Reserve and the imposition of a literally divisive, polluting state highway through the middle of the Victory community.

All of this so commuters from Stoke, Richmond and beyond can continue their unsustaina­ble, one person per car commuting habits. In the 21st century we should surely be moving away from the
