Nelson lose SI div 3 title to Otago

The Nelson division three representa­tive badminton team has missed out on the South Island interprovi­ncial title by a solitary game following a countback loss to Otago 1 in Christchur­ch at the weekend.

Having beaten Marlboroug­h and Canterbury earlier in the year, Nelson were confident heading into the remaining ties against Southland, Otago 1 and Otago 2.

The weekend started well with comprehens­ive 13-3 wins over both Southland and Otago 2.

This left Nelson and Otago 1 undefeated as they faced off for the final and a playoff against the North Island division three winner.

Otago started well and took a 5-3 lead after the singles, maintainin­g this lead through the doubles which were shared 2-2.

It meant that Nelson had to win all four mixed doubles, but after

With the tie locked up at 8-8, a countback of games gave Otago the title at 19-18.

The recent Nelson championsh­ips resulted in a breakthrou­gh for Kelsey Judson who claimed his first open singles title with a 21-13 21-15 win over Leo Ho in the final.
