In top gear
Former All Black wing Hosea Gear scored two of the Barbarians’ five tries in a 39-29 victory over an inexperienced England team in an entertaining non-cap international at Twickenham. With most of the country’s top players on tour in New Zealand, a virtually third-choice England lineup did well to go into halftime 18-14 ahead despite tries by Kiwi center Benson Stanley and Argentina fullback Juan Martin Hernandez for the Barbarians. Georgia Noth8 Mamuka Gorgodze stretched over early in the second half to give the Barbarians a lead they would not relinquish, and Gear crowned an explosive display with two tries in the final 16 minutes.
