Doctor did right thing by my Dad
Around 12 years or so ago, my once vibrant father died after years of Alzheimer’s disease and a series of strokes had robbed him of any quality of life. When my sister and I arrived for his funeral, the funeral director asked us if we were comfortable with the circumstances of our father’s death. As neither of us live in Australia any longer, we had no idea that his doctor was one of those suspected of euthanising patients in certain instances.
Both of us having known our father for over 50 years as an intelligent, hardworking and fun-loving man could find no fault at all with what the doctor may or may not have done to hasten his death.
I would like to have had the opportunity to thank the doctor for his care at the very end of our father’s life, whatever part he played. If he was directly responsible I thank and applaud him for taking the courageous decision to end the suffering of one who had endured years of dreadful illness and was ready to go.
