How world reacted

-

A wave of disbelief was felt across New Zealand — and in parts of the world — after John Key’s out-of-the-blue resignation. Here are some reactions to the soon-to-beformer PM’s shock announcement. Key’s resignation was widely picked up by international media including the Guardian, CNN and BBC who published the news on their home pages.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull texted Key, who he described on Twitter as a “great friend”, from across the ditch: “Say it ain’t so, bro”. He later acknowledged Key on Twitter as an “inspiring world leader”: John Key has been an extraordinary & inspiring world leader, role model and great friend. His resignation is a great loss for NZ & the world Malcolm Turnbull (@TurnbullMalcolm) The PM’s son, DJ Max Key, posted a tribute to his father on Facebook and Instagram, along with a family snap. Former Prime Minister Helen Clark offered her support on Twitter for the man who took her job in 2008, wishing him all the best: Wishing @johnkeypm & his family all the best for the future. He has advocated tirelessly for NZ internationally these past 8 years. Helen Clark (@HelenClarkUNDP) Corrections and Police Minister Judith Collins put a cat among the pigeons when she told TV3’s Newshub she had not decided if she would go for the top job. “I’m thinking about it. I’m not really prepared to go any further”. Comedian Rhys Darby joked about taking over as Prime Minister, and having Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement and director Taika Waititi join him in his Cabinet: Flattered with the request to take over as new NZ PM but . . . I’ll only accept if @AJemaineClement @TaikaWaititi and Bret join my cabinet. Rhys Darby (@rhysiedarby) Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott shared a rather confusing message on Twitter: Fine innings from John Key. NotMany pollies retire unbeaten on a double ton. Tony Abbott (@TonyAbbottMHR) A joke Facebook event “John Key Resignation Piss Up” has been set up, promising Winston Peters as DJ and Bill English “flaming some snags” on the barbie. Almost 3000 people have expressed interest in the party. The announcement was dubbed #Jexit on social media this afternoon. #johnkeyresigns #jexit Ida (@ — idarima)
