Girls’ rights forgotten in trans debate

-

A transgender male enrolled at an all girls school is demanding to use their toilets, despite the provision of gender neutral facilities. Toilets at school are where girls talk to each other about girl things — their development, their women’s issues, boys and other things. Do the girls at this school have any rights whatsoever? Are they not worthy of the same protection we provide for all other teenage females?

This is not a case of discrimination; it is about a militant transgender pushing new boundaries at the expense of all the other students. These girls are going through puberty which entails some of the biggest emotional and transitional upheavals in their lives. It is simply outrageous that the issue is even open for debate.

Until such time as a transgender person goes through the same puberty as the gender they “identify” with, they should not be allowed to use the same private facilities. Kent Millar, Blockhouse Bay.
