Arrest after two people shot
Two people were shot and one person was in custody last night after an incident in Newfield, Invercargill.
Police said one person was “assisting police with their inquiries” after they were called to an address on Otepuni Ave soon after 8pm.
The road was closed and business owners told to stay inside.
A witness at the scene said armed offenders squad officers and ambulance staff were at the site of a commercial building.
It is understood a firearm was found at the scene. At least one person was taken to hospital.
Reports on social media said a man had surrendered to police.
One person commented: “So everyone in the area is safe now.”
A witness said he saw a man pull up on a push bike, put on a balaclava and pull something out from his jacket shortly before the incident. Police would not give more details. The witness said “there were cops everywhere”.
“There were cop cars at each end of the cordon, a couple of ambos and a fire engine turned up at one point.”
