Libraries’ prominence

-

Congratulations to the Herald, and particularly to Janet McAllister, for giving prominence to the now vexatious matter of Auckland Council management procedures.

To find that many librarians, most of whom are qualified women who love what they are doing — with people who love books — are literally becoming ill with anxiety, is appalling.

At least three of the library management team are qualified librarians, so should know of the busyness of library business (including child minding, it seems). Assuming this to be so, it is therefore likely that they are under pressure (i.e. being bullied) by the finance mandarins as being an easy scapegoat for the council to appear to be “making savings”.

Prune the upper branches of the council tree. Don’t muck about with its stout foundations.

G.R.Williams, Takapuna.
