My Holiday: Ahi Karunaharan

-

Ahi Karunaharan: ‘I need a playlist for the journey and for the destination.’ What was your greatest holiday? Canada. My first solo trip. If we bump into you on holiday, what are you most likely to be doing? Checking out the local arts scene and secret, nontouristy, culinary hideouts. If we could teleport you to one place in New Zealand for a week-long holiday, where would it be? Paihia. How about for a dream holiday internationally? Too many on the list. I’ve been pretty much everywhere except the States. There are so many places in the States I want to go to. My top three: San Francisco, New York, New Orleans. Aisle seat or window seat? Window. What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done when travelling? Hiding my money inside my shoes and under my cap in fear of being mugged. Very smelly notes. Complete this sentence: I can’t travel without . . . My music. I need a playlist for the journey and for the destination. What’s the best travel tip you’ve ever been given? It had to be Mum. But make photocopies of important documents. What was the most memorable meal you’ve had while travelling? In Kandy, atop a hill station in Sri Lanka. Appam (crispy rice flour pancake) and seeni sambol (caramelised spicy onion sambol) and coconut roti. What’s the best thing you’ve brought back from a trip? I always bring back books or art. Best thing so far is a collection of puppets from India I’ve been wanting to make a show with. Favourite airport at which to land? Changi. I could live there! What’s the next trip you’ve got planned? The Great South American Extravaganza!
