My Holiday: Hayden Hare

-

Holidays are for doing as little as possible, says Hayden Hare. What was your greatest holiday? 2003 — my first trip to the United States. Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York. And the worst? Any break is a good break, unless you’re broke, on forced leave and twiddling your thumbs at home. If we bump into you on holiday, what are you most likely to be doing? As little as possible — it will be sunny and I’ll be in jandals. If we could teleport you to one place in New Zealand for a week-long holiday, where would it be? Home. Otautahi. Christchurch. How about for a dream holiday internationally? Scuba diving from the deck of my private bungalow, perched above the tropical waters of the Maldives. What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done when travelling? Forty eight hours non-stop in Vegas without sleep. That hangover in 40C weather is not smart. Booking last-minute tickets to the Gold Coast that meant flying directly into Cyclone Debbie wasn’t clever either. Aisle seat or window seat? Window. Complete this sentence: I can’t travel without . . . At minimum a TV in the back of the headrest, especially for long-haul — I go stir crazy. What’s the best travel tip you’ve ever been given? I usually do the tipping. What was the most memorable meal you’ve had while travelling? Above water at the pile-village of Panyi — Phang Nga Bay, Andaman Sea, Thailand. Not so much the food but the location was different. What’s the best thing you’ve brought back from a trip? Sixteen pairs of new shoes. Sneakers Street, Hong Kong. Favourite airport to land at? Changi Airport, Singapore. What’s the next trip you’ve got planned? Hawaii — an escape from the New Zealand winter. Hayden Hare is Flava’s Content Director. flava.co.nz
