Wood can’t save Burnley from former club

Two penalty goals to Chris Wood — one during the game and one in a shootout — weren’t enough to rescue Burnley from an upset loss to his former club Leeds United in the League Cup yesterday.

Championship club Leeds won the third-round fixture on penalties after the score was locked at 2-2 after regular time and extra time at English Premier League outfit Burnley’s home ground, Turf Moor.

All Whites striker Wood was a record signing for Burnley in August after scoring 30 goals last season for Leeds. His introduction off the bench in the 72nd minute, when the score was 0-0, brought the game to life.

After falling behind to a goal from Hadi Sacko in the 80th minute, Wood replied for his team from the penalty spot in the 89th minute. A dramatic injury time saw Pablo Hernandez reclaim the lead for Leeds with a 94thminute penalty before Robbie Brady replied for the hosts in the 96th minute, sending the game to extra time.

Wood had a decent chance to win the game for Burnley late in extra time but his header sailed over the crossbar.

The big Kiwi converted Burnley’s first penalty in the shootout which was level 3-3 before James Tarkowski had his shot saved by Leeds goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, ultimately handing victory to the visitors.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, says he is “sick of conceding goals” after his side’s defensive problems returned to haunt them in a 2-0 League Cup defeat by Leicester.

Klopp’s side enjoyed 70 per cent of the ball in the third round tie and had 21 shots compared with Leicester’s eight but failure to cope with basic defensive tasks cost them.

Liverpool have kept two clean sheets in nine matches so far this season and are winless in four games in all competitions.
