OJ Simpson free on parole until 2022

-

OJ Simpson has been freed on parole after nine years in prison for a Las Vegas armed robbery, a Nevada prison official says.

Unlike when he walked free after his murder trial in 1995, Simpson faces parole supervision for another five years.

Nevada state prison spokeswoman Brooke Keast told the Associated Press Simpson was released early yesterday.

The 70-year-old Simpson told the parole board that he wanted to live in Florida.

However, the Florida Department of Corrections said officials had not received a transfer request or required documents.

Simpson was sent to prison in Nevada for a botched hotel-room heist of sports memorabilia 12 years after he was acquitted of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles.

Simpson’s lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, said he wouldn’t confirm his client’s location.

The former football hero, TV and movie actor, advertising pitchman and celebrity criminal defendant has served nine years in prison for the 2007 armed robbery involving two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room.

He maintained he led five men into the confrontation to retrieve stolen personal items and family mementos.

After he was acquitted in 1995 of murder charges he was found civilly liable for the slayings in 1997 and ordered to pay the victims’ families US$33.5 million ($46.48m).

Simpson was sentenced in Nevada to up to 33 years, but granted parole in July. — AP
