Brockie and Fallon could earn recalls
There may be some selection shocks in the All Whites team to face Peru in next month’s World Cup playoff.
The Herald understands All Whites coach Anthony Hudson is set to recall striker Rory Fallon, who scored the pivotal goal against Bahrain that sent the All Whites to the 2010 World Cup. Fallon is playing in the seventh tier of English football.
It is also believed Hudson is considering bringing back Jeremy Brockie almost 18 months after he last pulled on the silver fern.
Recalls for either would be a surprise considering their lack of recent involvement. Neither were part of the Confederations Cup in June, or the qualifying matches this year against Fiji and Solomons Islands.
But their inclusion would indicate Hudson has decided that experience and big match temperament are vital in the death or glory matches against Peru in Wellington and Lima.
Fallon has enjoyed a long career which peaked in the English Championship but he has dropped down the divisions in recent seasons. The 35-year-old was last week signed by semi-professional Dorchester United, who play in the Southern League Premier Division, English football’s seventh tier.
Brockie has been an irregular All White since Hudson took charge in August 2014, making only six appearances. His last outings came at the 2016 Nations Cup and he has scored only one goal in 49 internationals. But the 30-year-old appears in the form of his life, having scored 40 goals in 94 games for SuperSport United and helping the club to three successive South African Cup victories.
