Library users deserve better

-

Too bad the Auckland City Council budget didn’t extend to providing larger library facilities to cope with demand. Instead we get an artful use of reduced space, with deceptive “trompe d’oeil” arrangement of objects, seating and decor.

This in turn seems to necessitate what I believe is the heavy-handed presence of security guards. Library users are individually scrutinised as they enter and leave all levels by at least three vigilant officers, who are also constantly patrolling all “open plan” areas.

Computer users are, in my opinion, intrusively monitored without effect, as people are inconsiderate, disruptive and noisy in an area that is in full public view and under camera surveillance anyway.

Gone is the peace and quiet expected in a space traditionally dedicated to learning, research and reading.

For what one supposes is a cultural amenity, the presence of security staff is more obvious than in the Art Gallery, a Work and Income office or even at the airport.

I would like to see some justification for this, not just in vague rumours of theft, but in actual proof of the efficacy of this sort of policing in terms of results (apart from intimidation).

Auckland residents and ratepayers deserved better from a valued community asset.
