PM keeps watch on ballet strife

- — Derek Cheng

Upheavals at the Royal NZ Ballet are being closely monitored by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

The arts company held crisis talks yesterday after suggestions that leading ballerina Abigail Boyle was considering leaving.

A letter issued from board chair Steven Fyfe said she would be with the company in 2018.

At least 10 of the company’s 36 dancers have left since the arrival of artistic director Patricia Barker.

Four former dancers have filed formal grievances, while another employment dispute is being investigated internally.

Fyfe acknowledged that supporters had raised concerns about the direction of the company, and asked for feedback.

The company gets about $5.4 million in funding from the Government each year.

Ardern said she was keeping an eye on the issue and had asked officials for a briefing.

“I take a keen interest in making sure we have a successful Royal NZ ballet company.”

In his letter, Fyfe said: “Doubt has been expressed by some about our commitment to providing opportunities for New Zealanders.

“The RNZB has always been a blend of ballet talent from New Zealand and the rest of the world.

“We are as committed as ever to nurturing New Zealand’s creative talent ... Equally, Patricia is committed to seeking New Zealand talent to join the RNZB.”
