Talent to keep an eye on at Te Rapa tomorrow

- Mike Dillon

Average Saturday compared to what we’ve been used to lately, but there is a very important focus — identifying horses we can stay with through the holiday period and beyond.

There are a few of them going around tomorrow.

One is Kachhi in Race 6 at Te Rapa. If you need convincing of that, get onto the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing website and check out the talented mare’s Ellerslie winning run on December 2. She got well back in running, Danielle Johnson had to be patient to weave a home-straight passage and the determination the Ruakaka mare showed in the closing 120m to get up late was extremely impressive.

Everything she has done suggests she will find her best form over middle distances and she steps up from 1600m to 2100m here.

Among the others to take notes on are Glendalough in the opener. She made an impression on debut when she flashed home strongly to be narrowly beaten. You have to assume she has learned something from that piece of education and even in a field that appears to have a number of promising maidens engaged she makes appeal. Definitely one to follow.

Starrybeel has had only the one run and took the eye getting home strongly into third. Races like a stayer and may not be seen at peak until getting up to a middle distance, but will appreciate the step from 1400m to 1600m tomorrow.

Griffin has ability and will need it as a 3-year-old facing older horses carrying equal topweight of 59kg. He has been freshened and seems to go well when in that state. He will probably improve further with this outing but at least take notes for what comes over the holidays. He will definitely be better suited when he races at level weights against his own age.

Legramor might have cost punters dollars and additional smiles when beaten on this track last start, but it was not a bad effort. Give her another chance in the closer tomorrow because she has excellent ability.
