The red carpet component of any awards ceremony has long been considered a spectacle in itself: The domain of bold couture, sleek celebrity physiques and the occasional wardrobe malfunctio­n that often catches as much attention as the perfect choice in attire. But this year the Golden Globes red carpet was used for something far beyond fashion for fashion’s sake. As celebritie­s began their parade for the cameras, E! host Gulliana Rancic noted the poignant question this year was not what celebritie­s are wearing but why. Amid what quickly became a complete wash-out of black, we’ve highlighte­d the strongest looks on this year’s red carpet. Millie Bobby Brown Bobby Brown arrived solo on the red carpet in her most grown-up look yet: a satin mini with a heavy shoulder frill and cutesy silver heels. Debra Messing Messing opted for sparkles over tailored dress pants as she told Ranic she hoped the Time’s Up silent protest would go some way to putting an end to gender pay inequality. Elisabeth Moss A simple, yet eye-catching, choice from the star of The Handmaid’s Tale, Moss picked perfect dimensions with this full skirt, sleeve big winner was which took best drama motion picture, best actress in a drama for Frances McDormand, best actor in a drama for Sam Rockwell and best screenplay for writer/director Martin McDonagh. Though not nominated for best director, Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig accepted the award for best motion picture, musical or comedy for her coming-of-age drama. Star Saoirse Ronan received best actress in a musical or comedy for her performanc­e in Lady Bird.

Female-led shows took home the major awards in the TV categories. The biggest winner was the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies, which won best limited series or movie, best actress for Nicole Kidman, best supporting actress for Laura Dern, and best supporting actor for Alexander Skarsgard.

The Handmaid’s Tale took best series, drama, and best actress for Elisabeth Moss. This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown made history as the first black to win best actor in a TV drama.
