Worksafe ruling baffling

-

On December 14 last year a high-profile company was installing fibre cable in the shared driveway alongside my house in New Lynn. As there were safety cones across our front garden gate, my daughter visited using the rear gate. Later when she departed she opened the rear gate and a long metal pole with a very sharp point fell towards her cutting her mid chest and upper stomach which bled profusely.

The following day I took my daughter to our local clinic to receive medical attention and register as an ACC event. The wound was bandaged and an antibiotic cream prescribed. Some days later I reported the incident to Worksafe NZ using an on-line form. An investigator phoned me to say that the accident did not meet their criteria for investigation.

Mike Westgate, New Lynn. When is government, even local government going to take control? The rahui put on the Waitakeres by local Maori is really just another bid for control. Access to Mt Wellington, Mt Eden, Mt Victoria has been restricted by the unelected Tupuna Maunga Authority and now the Waitakeres with a rahui.

Considering there is no cure for kauri dieback, and that it travels in moist soil nearly 22 metres a day, it must have totally permeated the whole of the Waitakeres by now and the kauri are either doomed or will become resistant.

Once Maori gain control of all these public places, how long before a fee is imposed on the public for access?

Adrian Wilson, Northcote. I don’t agree with closing off vehicle access to our cones. Not everyone is capable or minded to walk up the mounts, particularly in adverse weather. How about several vehicle-free days a week? Then everyone is accommodated.

Different cones could have different days so those who cannot walk up have the option of going up at least one mount on any given day. R. Howell, Onehunga. I agree with Matt Heath’s column for better use of Eden Park. Top of my property purchase checklist was the nonnegotiable “must be within walking distance of Eden Park” and having secured a little villa in 1990 my love affair with everything Eden Park continues to grow. I’ve been to both Rugby World Cups, cricket games galore, season tickets date back to 1991, the Dalai Lama’s visit in 2002 resonates as a highlight and most times the Blues and All Blacks play our front yard is decorated appropriately, sparking friendly neighbourhood competition.

Late last year I had the privilege of meeting Nick Sautner, our new Eden Park CEO, and apart from being a genuinely lovely person his enthusiasm for our stadium is enlightening and encouraging. Like Matt I so want more for this amazing stadium and encourage everyone to get in behind her and make this jewel in our crown shine brightly for a long time to come. Kerry Copas, Sandringham. On Saturday evening I had the privilege and pleasure of attending the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Pops concert at the Auckland Town Hall. What a fabulous experience. Firstly, the expertise and enthusiasm of the musicians and the personable, knowledgeable conductor and secondly, the ambience of our beautiful Town Hall.

I wish more children could be exposed to occasions such as this.

Andrea Dorn, Meadowbank.
