The Jamaicans’ tight defence in the circle meant Mes was forced to take more long-range shots, and with the absence of the injured Maria Folau, the Ferns struggled to close the gap.

Defender Temalisi Fakahokota­u was back on court in the third quarter, after sitting out their win over Malawi due to a sprained ankle on Wednesday night, and her brave and ambitious defensive tactics made an immediate impact.

However, it wasn’t enough to help the Ferns claw their way back, as Jamaica held their three-point lead well into the final quarter before clearing away.
