Gilt-edged chances for stablemates

-

Blanco Bay and Masters Choice will get few better opportunities than those presented to them at Avondale today.

“If they can’t win then they might never win,” co-trainer Kenny Rae said yesterday.

Blanco Bay runs in the AJC Members’ 2200m and Masters Choice is in the Wingate 200m while stablemate Major Tom will resume in the West Brook Cellar Door Waimauku 1400m.

“He’s a good horse, but he might just need the run,” Rae said.

Major Tom has won three of his 13 starts and is unbeaten in two outings on heavy tracks.

Smart winter performer Wooden Edge will be back in action on Saturday.

“He’ll run at Pukekohe in the Rating 75 1200m and Amber Sims will ride him, she rode him well at the trials,” trainer Chris Wood said.

Wooden Edge, who will be having his first raceday start since November, finished third in his open 935m heat at Cambridge earlier this month.

The lightly-raced six-year-old has won six of his 18 starts, all of them on slow or heavy tracks.

The well-related New Zealandbred Heir To The Throne remains an outside chance to make the Queensland Derby (2200m) field.

The brother to Melbourne Cup (3200m) winner Prince Of Penzance was a trial winner over 1270m at the Sunshine Coast yesterday and will run there on Sunday over 1600m in a bid to gain a start in the Doomben feature on June 10.
