Capital’s blowhards spend up large in Queen City

-

Wellington spent a dollar or two today telling Auckland that the capital is the world’s most liveable city, according to a Deutsche Bank survey.

The ad on the first two pages of the Herald was funded by the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency and was to remind people, according to Wreda’s David Perks, that New Zealand has more than one city.

Perks, Wreda’s destination and marketing general manager, said: “We have of course been named the number one most liveable city in the world and we are proud and pleased to share that with Auckland. We love Auckland and we know Aucklanders love Wellington.”

Wellington is sunny, though not as sunny as the Queen City (Wellington 1939 sunshine hours last year against Auckland’s 2110); a little damp (1349mm of rain against 1308mm); warm, but not quite as warm (13.4C average temperature against 16.1C); and somewhat breezy. Last year, the suburb of Kelburn had a peak wind gust of 139km/h in February while Auckland’s Western Springs had a top gust of 83km/h.

Steve Armitage of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (Ateed) said the confirmation of most liveable city was a “great award for Wellington, and we’d like to pass on our congratulations. Wellingtonians are always claiming that ‘you can’t beat Wellington on a good day’, but for the other 364 days of the year Auckland’s world-class food and beverage, beaches and natural attractions simply cannot be beaten,” he quipped.
