Tactix setting standard at Superclub competition
The Mainland Tactix are leading the way at netball’s Super Club competition in Nelson.
After recording Sunday’s biggest win, beating Singapore's Sneakers by 35 goals, the Tactix claimed a decisive 64-36 victory over South Africa's Gauteng Jaguars last night.
The Tactix midcourt played with speed and agility, while their Jane Watson-led defence restricted scoring opportunities for the Jaguars. Shooter Brooke Leaver secured her side valuable two-point goals, while Ellie Bird's towering presence proved too much for the Jaguars defenders.
The Southern Steel suffered a shock 65-61 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday but bounced back with a comprehensive 80-52 win over Sneakers last night.
Steel shooter Jen O'Connell led her side with a solid opening quarter performance before up-and-coming goal shoot Georgia Heffernan, who was an official training partner throughout the Steel's Premiership season, was given an opportunity to show her skills.
Sneakers shooter Pei Ying Wong showed impressive form from the two-point circle, but with Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit and Abby Erwood sharing the load at goal defence, the Sneakers' opportunities to score were limited.
The Central Pulse were unable to continue last night’s run of Kiwi victories, losing 50-49 to the New South Wales Institute of Sport.
After a tightly-contested opening quarter, the Pulse slowly fell behind, with NSWIS shooter Georgia Marshall proving a tough match-up for defender Sulu Fitzpatrick.
Whitney Souness was in sublime form in the Pulse midcourt with timely intercepts and speedy play but shooters Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Aliyah Dunn often struggled to convert under pressure from the feisty Australian defence. Although closing the gap significantly in the second half, the Pulse couldn’t quite haul in the Australian side and fell to their first loss of the competition.
Today’s biggest match sees the Steel needing to beat the Tactix to have a chance of making Thursday’s semifinals.
