Checks into the Mercure Eiffel Tower Paris Centre

Getting there: I had flown in to Paris Charles de Gaulle and with midmorning traffic it took about 90 minutes to get to the hotel. Thrilled our travel agent Gina at YOU Travel Takapuna had insisted on us booking a private transfer, as taxi costs could have been sky high.

Check-in experience: The first impression was a massive wow. What a view — 300m away from the Eiffel Tower itself. Leititia at check-in was friendly and happy. Our room wasn’t ready but she recommended an amazing lunch spot just around the corner for us while we waited.

Room: We had a Junior Suite on the top floor (the 12th), at the end, looking right at the Eiffel Tower. Very impressed! Given we were in Paris for Valentine’s Day, this room exceeded expectations. The junior suite has a separate bedroom with double bed, lounge area, en suite and separate toilet.

Price: We paid $350 for our double standard room, and were lucky enough to be upgraded to the suite when we checked in.

What's so good about this place: The location. So close to all the tourist spots, and even closer to some hot Parisian dining spots.

And the bad: Absolutely nothing.

What's in the neighbourhood: The Eiffel Tower, many dining options, a mini supermarket, one of the pick-up points for the hop-on hop-off bus tour.

Toiletries: The usual.

Food and drink: We had a delicious meal at the hotel restaurant with great, friendly service. French people love Kiwis.

The bed: A double bed that was ridiculously comfortable and perfect in size for Valentine’s Day cuddles.

A room with a view? Just one of the most famous landmarks and tourist attractions in the world.

Bathroom: The en suite had a separate shower and bath, and toilet, and there was a separate toilet off the lounge area.

Free Wi-Fi: Yes.

Noise: Just the hum of thousands of people enjoying Paris.

Value for money: I would love to stay here again.

Exercise facilities: Well-stocked gym — not that I had time for a workout.
