The homecoming

New signing Riyad Mahrez scored twice in the second half, his first goals for City, as they turned on the goal power and sparkled at winless Cardiff.

Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Guendogan were also on target in the first half.

Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka was hit by a bottle in a goalless home draw with Newcastle.

Wan-Bissaka was struck by a plastic bottle thrown by a Newcastle fan during the game at Selhurst Park. Wan-Bissaka didn’t appear to be hurt and played on.

He appeared to be unwittingly caught up in persistent protests by Newcastle supporters against club owner Mike Ashley, who was attending a game for the first time since May 2017. Newcastle remain winless through six rounds.

Tottenham overcame Brighton 2-1 in the rain, and Burnley ended their worst start to a top flight campaign in nearly a century by crushing topfive side Bournemouth 4-0.

England striker Harry Kane moved alongside Jermain Defoe as Tottenham’s joint fifth-highest scorer on 143 after converting a penalty at Brighton just before the break. He reached the milestone in 216 games, 147 quicker than Defoe.

Erik Lamela also netted, his fourth goal in four league games, to take the heat off Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino following a run of three consecutive defeats in all competitions.

Burnley’s first four-goal game in nearly two years earned a first win in 10 league games. The win was enough to move the Lancashire club from the bottom to 16th overall, while Bournemouth dropped to sixth.

All White Chris Wood came off the bench with half an hour to play and Burnley leading 2-0 but didn’t score.

Leicester City won 3-1 to send Huddersfield Town to the bottom of the table, while Fulham and Watford drew 1-1.
