He had been testing his new Go Pro Hero 7 with friends from Kaikoura Kayaks when the oddity happened.

an octopus. It was quite a way away and then next thing it just went deep and we didn’t know where the seal was and . . . it popped up [beside us]”.

The seal still had the octopus in its jaws and swung it around, hitting Mulinder across the face.

“I don’t know who got the bigger fright — the octopus, the seal or me.”

Mulinder said it was “freaky as hell” because the octopus then held on to the bottom of the kayak and they couldn’t get it off.

“So [this guy used] his paddle as an egg slice . . . to get the octopus off.

“The seal swam away, the octopus went the other way, and we paddled off,” he laughed.
