HAVANA DREAMING

- — Dan Ahwa

A labour of love is how Jessica Aggrey describes her retail venture Obispo, which she runs alongside sister Anita, an accomplished makeup artist, and stylist friends Eloise Morin and Judith Campbell. Inspired by their trips to Havana, Cuba, the group describe their store as the best-kept secret in town. We’re inclined to agree. Given the growing number of Australian retailers and chain stores popping up all over town, the unique store is a breath of fresh air and the perfect alternative shopping experience that nods to general stores of yore. With an eye for style, the friends have 10 years of experience between them in the worlds of makeup, film, TV and fashion, and this is reflected in their thoughtful curation of clothing, collectables, accessories, jewellery, homeware and gifts. Named after the longest boulevard in Havana, the store’s ever-changing stock is a welcome surprise for its growing customer base. And it’s this constant editing that’s become integral to its popularity, says Jessica. “The idea that one doesn’t necessarily need a large wardrobe to be fashionable or stylish is pivotal to the way we select pieces.” Jessica’s experience as a jeweller has also come in handy — she sells her limited collection exclusively at the store and offers a bespoke service for remodelling, along with special pieces such as wedding and engagement rings. With Christmas just around the corner, this is one place we’d suggest visiting — especially for that hard-to-buy-for someone.
