ACC e-scooter claims jump

- Cameron Smith

Sprains, concussions and dislocations are among dozens of injuries from electric scooter crashes in the past month as ACC claims continue to rise.

ACC confirmed that in the past five days there had been more than three injury claims a day in Auckland alone.

From October 14 to November 5 there had been more than 90 ACC injury claims. Of those, 57 were in Auckland and 32 were in Christchurch. Last week the total figure of ACC injury claims sat at 69.

It comes after US transportation giant Lime, which launched its e-scooters in Auckland and Christchurch last month, launched a US$3 million ($4.5m) “Respect the Ride” global campaign to educate riders and non-riders on safety.

The company has come in for criticism regarding incidents of unsafe use by riders.

Toby Sun, chief executive and co-founder of Lime, said the company was committed to public safety and education.

The global campaign will include adverts, an ambassador programme, a community pledge for riders to commit to safe-riding standards, helmet distribution, a micro-mobility summit and a dedicated safety team.

Lime operates in more than 100 cities across 12 countries.
