Body found in hunt for woman

- Luke Kirkness

Police searching for missing woman Sonam Shelar yesterday recovered a woman’s body on a remote South Wairarapa beach.

Formal identification was not completed last night but the body was believed to be that of the 26-year-old, who was first reported missing from her Wellington home on Saturday.

Police went to the popular surfing area known as White Rock, an hour southeast of Martinborough, about midday. A witness told the Herald they saw police cars and emergency vehicles heading down the metal road to the isolated, windswept beach.

Sonam Shelar married Sagar Shelar in December last year and moved to New Zealand in April. Sonam Shelar was five months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

Sagar Shelar was in tears when the Herald spoke to him briefly yesterday evening. He said he was unable to talk.

Wellington CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee said Sonam Shelar’s next of kin had been notified.

“Police are committed to supporting the family of the deceased and providing answers for them,” McKee said.

Sagar Shelar said earlier yesterday that he believed he was the “first suspect” in his wife’s disappearance. He said that police had searched his home.

Earlier this week, Sagar Shelar said his wife had been upset about a recent ultrasound.

“After the ultrasound they were not sure if it was a girl or boy.

“As soon as we got in the car she was crying and so upset because she wanted a boy.”

Police are appealing for any sightings of Sonam Shelar last Friday or Saturday.
