High treats travellers to balmy days
The high-pressure system that has allowed holidaymakers in the North Island to lap up constant sunshine and hot temperatures is to continue.
Kawerau recorded yesterday’s hottest temperature at 32C, while in the south, Haast, Te Anau and Milford Sound could only manage 18C.
A ridge of high pressure has set anchor just north of the country and is to thank for the classic summer weather over the past few days.
Yesterday, fine weather with light southwest breezes nudged the mercury in Auckland to a steady 25C.
Meanwhile, the east coast of the North Island basked in hot temperatures with Gisborne, Napier and Whakata¯ ne all nearing 30C.
MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray told the Herald similar weather is set to continue throughout the week and into the weekend.
“[Today] there will be a little bit of morning cloud around and southwest breezes but a generally fine day and 24C” for Auckland, she said.
“Wednesday is also fine with light winds — a great day [for] the beach,” she said.
The fine weather will also please tennis fans heading to the ASB Classic, with mid-20 highs through the day, and high teens at night.
It also might be time to head out and get an electric fan as hot overnight temperatures can be expected in Auckland throughout this week.
On Thursday Aucklanders can expect some isolated rain but an otherwise fine day.
A moist, warm, northwest flow will sweep through the south of the country before temperatures rise again tomorrow.
