LEGENDS OF BATHURST: WELCOME
Happy New Year to you all!!
In January 2018, Hampton Downs hosted the first Legends of Bathurst and it was more successful than any of us could have imagined. The response from the drivers and the fans who turned up in their droves to meet their heroes was outstanding. The autograph sessions, in particular, were a huge hit, with fans relishing the chance to mix and mingle with some of the greats.
A good indication of how much the Legends enjoyed themselves is how many of our first timers are back again this year. Jim & Steve Richards, John Bowe and Paul Radisich will be joined this year by the legendary Dick Johnson and the Stone Brothers, Ross and Jimmy.
Bathurst holds a pretty special place in the hearts of Kiwi motorsport fans and the team at Hampton Downs is looking forward to another exceptional weekend of nostalgic entertainment featuring the stars, the cars and the yarns.
When I first moved to Australia from Scotland in 1980, watching the Bathurst 1000 on TV was my only connection to the sport. Jim Richards, Dick Johnson and John Bowe were some of the stars I watched on television back then and it’s very special to have them here this weekend.
I’d like to thank the Legends - not only our marquee names but also the owners and drivers of the race cars in all the different categories for the amount of time, money and energy they put into the sport.
As well as celebrating the Legends of Bathurst, the event will also feature some top class racing from the Historic Touring Cars, Central Muscle Cars, Formula Libre, Pre-65s and Formula Ford. On a personal note, I’m looking forward to going door to door with the great Kenny Smith again, in the Formula Libre category. For an old fella, he goes alright!
