My Holiday: Martin Devlin Check-in Desk

-

What was your greatest holiday?

My job is watching sport and talking about sport. So when I go on holiday I go to where my favourite teams play so I can do more of the same. Boring huh?

And the worst?

Anything involving a tent. Listen, I’m too old and gnarly nowadays not to have a nice bed involved.

If we bump into you on holiday, what are you most likely to be doing?

At Old Trafford (Manchester) or FedEx Field (Washington DC) or visiting the few remaining US Civil War sites I’ve yet to see. Boring #2 huh?

If we could teleport you to one place in NZ for a week-long holiday, where would it be?

Abel Tasman National Park. Shhhhh, please don’t tell anyone — it’s so perfect, it doesn’t need spoiling by hundreds of first-timers. Grumpy, huh?

How about for a dream holiday internationally?

Taking my two boys to Old Trafford to watch us beat that infernal Scouse lot.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done when travelling?

Staying in a $5-a-night motel in Fort Worth Texas “for the experience”. It was very scary and so dodgy they actually locked you into your room for the night. True.

Aisle seat or window seat?

Aisle. I’m the most boring person you’ll ever meet on a plane and I can’t bore you if I can’t trap you on the inside. Boring #3?

Complete this sentence: I can’t travel without …

my brand new passport. Never leave home without first checking its expiry date. You’ll only do it once…

What’s the best travel tip you’ve ever been given?

Take everything off the rental vehicle that identifies it as a rental vehicle. If only I’d been told that before hitting that motel in Fort Worth.

What was the most memorable meal you’ve had while travelling?

Margaritas on the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. So big they come in a bucket.

What’s the best thing you’ve brought back from a trip?

A beautifully sculpted steel, scale replica of the Empire State which doubles as a lamp.

Favourite airport at which to land?

Whichever one lets me sneak into the fancy lounge even though I’m not a member.

What’s the next trip you’ve got planned?

US of A, November to watch my crappy NFL team the Redskins play badly (again). I get morbid pleasure flying thousands of miles just so I can yell and scream about how useless they are in person. Boring #4.
