Hill tops

Please tell David Hill his column about Tony [Travel,

April 9] is the best thing ever — he came alive on the page. The Herald should organise a reunion, maybe another bike tour and video series called Watch Out, Chaps.

Quality over quantity

So agree with Simon Parker's article in the April 2 issue [‘Much to do about nothing’]. I am also an “overhearer”, listening to my own friends tell me just how many places they have visited. Such a pity one was unable to name places she'd visited, this from a cruise with more time than other forms of travel to sit and reflect and/or record. Quality over quantity anytime; a month at least in one destination is far more rewarding. I don't understand the average Kiwi’s panic to do it all and boast about it when they return. We may be at the bottom of the world, but it’s not outer space!

Auckland

A great impression

Little did we know as we flew across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch on February 27 that our planned 23-day tour of New Zealand would be so memorable; the beauty of its landscape, the hospitality of its peoples. The next day our tour departed Christchurch, stopped outside the Botanical Gardens, the Canterbury Museum and just a short distance from Christchurch Hospital. That stop now marks a defining location in the Garden City, a city still recovering from the devastation of the earthquake. Our tour ended in Auckland but not before we witnessed an outpouring of compassion, empathy and support for a city, and indeed the whole nation, not just among its peoples, but globally. Our visit has left us with a lasting and highly favourable impression. Thank you. Allan Gibson OAM
