PUT YOUR RECORDS ON

-

Holiday Records know a thing or two about vinyl. The Wellesley St flagship has a boutique record store and presses fresh vinyl from a purpose-built plant, New Zealand’s first record press in more than 30 years. You can also poach their expertise and sign up for their vinyl subscription service, Curate, which supplies collectors with fresh LPs throughout the year, matched to your music taste. Here are their picks of the month to get started. Compiled by Joel Woods and Ben Wallace. Holidayrecords.com

Nathan Haines

— Shift Left

This remastered reissue from Nathan Haines’ debut album includes three new remixes and reminds us why it’s still the country’s biggest-selling jazz album. Nathan is a saxophonist, producer, composer and legend of the New Zealand music industry and this album is a testament to that.

Bon Iver

— i,i

Three years was worth the wait for Justin Vernon at his best. With captivating falsetto vocals and a masterful use of autotune, i,i is superb. It touches on the best parts of all three of his previous albums in this record. Our favorite track is Faith.

Aldous Harding

— Designer

Seeing Aldous Harding play at the Powerstation in August reminded us how powerfully captivating her music is. Mysterious lyrics and pretty tunes laced with beautiful cryptic charm. It is a magical album, making it impossible to pick a favorite track. It’s strong from start to finish.

Same Name Confusion

— In Theory

A Wellington-based band we discovered since pressing their debut EP at Holiday Records. We were quickly impressed by the relatable lyrics and catchy tunes. A pleasant surprise lay on the B-Side with a live version exemplifying how electric they are playing live. Our favorite track is Must be Lucky.

Whitney

— Forever Turned Around

Whitney are going from strength to strength with their second album. A harmonious and warming record filled with heart-felt tunes that would be perfect to chuck on the turntable on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Our favourite track is Before I Know.
