SOUND & STYLE

- — Dan Ahwa

So symbiotic is the relationship between style and sound, some record companies have entire divisions dedicated to crafting the image of an artist. Although some may tut-tut at modern pop-acts for being overly manufactured, the idea of creating a musical persona through fashion is a timehonored tradition. David Bowie, Elton John and Diana Ross are no different to Lana del Rey, Bros or the Spice Girls when it comes down to it — each act knew how to manipulate the power of dress to their advantage as a way of enhancing their musical style. Gucci’s latest campaign, entitled ‘Come As You Are’, acknowledges this relationship and features two stylish musicians — godfather of punk Iggy Pop and, pictured, hip-hop sensation Gucci Mane. The pair feature in a series of exuberant party scenes photographed and filmed by American film director Harmony Korine, who wrote the seminal 1995 film Kids, directed by Larry Clarke. Swirling among a heady mix of guests including celebrities, tycoons and bourgeois ladies, the Gucci images highlight how a fascinating magpie mix of people at a party inspires the energy and vibrancy of its eclectic collections. Joining the kaleidoscope of faces is actress Sienna Miller, along with Italian actress Benedetta Barzini and artist Angelo Bucarelli, photographed at the glamorous Villa La Furibonda, situated on one of Rome’s oldest and most important roads, the via Appia Antica.
