Sharon Stephenson checks into the Kimpton Alexis Hotel, in Seattle
Getting there: Seattle might not have a subway but its light rail is just as good. If you’re coming/going from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, you’ll want the University stop, four blocks from the hotel (beware, two of those blocks are mountain-goat steep which isn’t fun with a heavy suitcase).
Check-in experience: If there was a world cup for concierges, Leanne Larkin would be a clear winner; there’s nothing about the Alexis or Seattle this woman doesn’t know.
First impressions: Like staying at the home of an elegant friend with a sweet spot for mid-century modern design. You’re also staying in a slice of history: this Italian Renaissance building survived the Great Seattle Fire of 1889; if you ask nicely, they’ll show you the scorch marks in the garage.
The Room: There are 121 rooms spread across two towers but all feature tasteful shades from the beige part of the colour wheel. There’s a high-tech shower that took me a few minutes to work out, and a deep tub. The toiletries are from Atelier Bloem whose oolong tea shampoo was so good, I immediately Googled where I could buy it in New Zealand (answer: nowhere). Bonus points for the yoga mat (there’s also a yoga TV channel). The Bed: Super-comfortable.
Amenities: Two gyms (one with a rock-climbing wall) and a salon/spa.
Food and drink: The Bookstore Bar & Cafe gets busy during the daily 3pm-6pm happy hours. I’m told the spicy miso clams are to die for but for breakfast, avo toast and eggs hit the spot. Contact: www.alexishotel.com
Would I return/perfect for: Can I move in? What’s so good about this place: I’m Team Dog, so almost lost my mind when a golden retriever checked in. Any animal is allowed as long as it can fit through the door.
And the bad: Nothing.
What’s in the hood: This is downtown, baby, so Pike Place Market, the Great Wheel, Seattle Art Museum and endless eateries, bars and shops.
Wi-Fi: As fast and efficient as the rest of this place.
