Historic Baltic

I was interested in Josie Spillane’s profile, which mentioned a visit to Lithuania. We were in the Baltic on a conducted private land tour a few years ago, also taking in Estonia, Latvia, Helsinki and St Petersburg.

On the Hill of Crosses there is a New Zealand cross made by a friend here in Cambridge which we took and planted among the many thousands of crosses there.

Like Josie, we also visited the museum in Vilnius which recorded the horrors perpetrated there by both the Nazis and the Soviets. I would recommend such a tour of this part of Europe (but not in the winter!)

Tall order

I was amused by your Departure Lounge “We don’t like” [Travel, October 29] comment regarding “people who stand right in front of you at the carousel at the airport”.

I am 1.49m tall and I always stand back so everyone can see their luggage. Usually someone 1.8m tall on their phone with wheelie on-board bag stands in front of me. I’m so bloody short everyone can see over my head.

When trying to get my luggage it’s like trying to get through a pack of front-row rugby players.

Luckily I have a sense of humour. Joanne McPherson

The Travel Editor replies: If you see me at the carousel, give me a nudge and I’ll grab your bag for you.

Fish for compliments

Re: The First XV of New Zealand food ( Travel, October 29). I suggest Kaiaua Fisheries, at 941 East Coast Rd, Kaiaua. Phone: (09) 232 2776.

Been there every Saturday for past five weeks. Fresh fish and if you ask will they accommodate the way you like it. Cheers,

Browns Bay

The Travel Editor replies: A truly superb spot.
