Intersection upgrade work begins
Residents are being reminded businesses in and around Porowini Ave are still open as work on two intersection upgrades is carried out.
At one end of Porowini Ave, Whanga¯rei District Council contractors are demolishing the former auto paint shop on the corner of Maunu Rd and Porowini Ave as the first step in widening that intersection.
The upgrade will include widening the bridge across the Raumanga stream to develop a separate left turn lane from Porowini Ave on to Maunu Rd and a new left turn lane from Maunu Rd on to Porowini Ave.
Work on that intersection will start in December and should be completed in May next year.
In the middle of Porowini Ave, contractors have started work on the intersection with Tarewa Rd.
The $1.8 million upgrade will provide an additional lane on Porowini Ave at the western side of the intersection and an extra lane on Tarewa Rd at the northern side of the intersection. It is expected to be completed by December. While the work is being carried out, various cones and barriers line the street. The council is reminding residents that the businesses are alive and thriving and is encouraging people to keep visiting them.
The council said traffic has been managing well with the disruption caused by the roadworks. Danica Mclean
